If you want to surprise someone, you need to think out of the box. The usual gifts revolve around the regular activities of recipients. If you are to give them something out of the ordinary, they'll be pleasantly surprised and happy at what they're going to get.
A gift that is out of the ordinary (or in some cases, extraordinary) is about defying convention and moving far beyond the expectations of people.
Before you “move beyond” expectations, you have to find out first the expectations. This depends wholly on what kind of person you're giving the gift to. There are generally two things that you are hoping for when you give the gift: surprise and delight, not surprise and dismay. Therefore, a rule of thumb when you want to surprise someone with a gift that's out of the norm is to never surprise him or her so much that delight turns into dismay.
Likes and dislikes can be determined by profession, age and temperament. Always remember that for recipients that are of advanced age, never give inappropriate gifts (unless you know that the recipient is into some “inappropriate things”).
If you're giving the gift to a kid, unusual gifts would include science kits, telescopes, mini-computers, a set of popular video games, sports shoes or a whole bucket of popular chocolates or candies. If the little tyke is a sports fan, give him a Major league baseball mug or an NFL fantasy football plaque to liven up his day.
The point of giving unusual gifts is that you want to cheer someone up- and you want your gift to be really remembered. Some people resort to sheer size: a retro tin sign would be a good idea if you want the recipient to have something from the past hanging on his or her living room or dining room.
Another way of hitting the mark of gift giving is by doing your research and finding out what the person is actually doing at the moment. When you find out, think of what the person would want to have at that moment and get it. Such effort would certainly be appreciated by the recipient, and your gift would surely be remembered.
You want to give something that would last for years too, so it might be a good idea also to browse your local furniture store for something small and lightweight. A footstool is always a welcome addition to any study room or living room.
